Her installation for Spore Space evokes a sense of intimacy, humor, and deliberation towards objects and infrastructures that operate in out-of-the-way* and complex spaces.
The exhibition lends visibility to the unseen mechanisms that make modern life possible. Calling attention to our built environment, Trask’s work examines how objects mediate our relationship to the earth through their creation and use. By giving tangible form to structures and networks which remain ethereal to most, the work aims to leave the viewer with a heightened awareness of their material surroundings – something Trask believes is essential for a mutualistic relationship with the earth.

In front of the gallery’s central window hangs a radio tower, depicted in denim appliqued on linen. The denim’s cut edges are left raw and fraying like a well-worn pair of jeans. The structure itself towers over the viewer, making these unnoticed networks of communication and connection feel pervasive and monumental. Below the curtain, a fiber optic cable made of cotton cord and denim emerges from the wall and travels across the ground, re-entering the wall and emerging from the ceiling, wiring the gallery space much the same way the planet has become connected by cables and waves. On the ground, cut black felt is meticulously intertwined and bar tacked together creating a portrait of the ocean floor rippling over the fiber optic cable. Reminiscent of a cast shadow, a rug, or a piece of lace, this piece summons a sense of familiarity and dissonance. The head of a ceramic pickaxe dangles from the ceiling—its handle has been replaced by cable—and rests inches above the floor. A tool made absurd but remaining menacing, a symbol of human impact on the earth. Trask's use of textiles throughout the exhibition makes these infrastructures, invisible through physical distance, tangible and proximate.
Lucinda Trask is a visual artist whose work, in the forms of installation, performance, sculpture, and writing, is primarily concerned with understanding how and why we shape land into landscape. Her work encourages viewers to reconsider their relationships with the inanimate matter they encounter in daily life. In 2019 Trask earned her MFA in Art from California Institute of the Arts. Since that time she has exhibited her work with REDCAT, Canary Test Gallery, Human Resources, and General Projects among others. For over ten years Trask created couture unisex garments in yearly cycles through her brand LIKE-clothing. These pieces explored a variety of themes that challenged the parameters of design, textiles, and pattern-making.

*Out-of-the-way is a loaded expression, but an idea that I keep returning to. When I think about out-of-the-way places, I first think about physical distance. But of course, every location is close to somebody or something. When we are trying to keep something ugly or exploitative at a distance, who is the distance from and where does it place such sites in proximity to? I first addressed this questions in my show The Away Space which posited the sites of lumber manufacture (plantation forests and mills) and sites of object disposal (landfills, barging trash to other states or countries) as faraway places even though they are sometimes relatively close at hand. My favorite example at the time was the fact that Glendale’s landfill is in Eagle Rock provoked controversy when it was first opened.

My subsequent show, Presbyopia, tied this phrase to classical ideas around the term landscape or human “improvement” of land. This can take many forms, from growing botanical gardens that beautify land to building infrastructures which allow bodies, data and goods to flow from spaces of extraction or manufacture to spaces of use. It also includes how humans represent land in images and art. By creating pictures that keep anything we don’t want to see out of sight, we also keep those things out of mind, creating a psychological distance between ourselves and that which we deem ugly.

The idea of the out-of-the-way can also be read as political distance as opposed to geographical or mental. In this sense I am using the term out-of-the-way as out of the hands of the civic body and that specifically regarding the privatization of infrastructure. Infrastructure’s purpose is to enable a functioning society, historically funded by governments and acting as a public utility. Today most information infrastructure is being created and bankrolled by large multi-national corporations and operated as a commercial enterprise. It is no coincidence that we—both citizens and governments—are becoming increasingly dependent on an information infrastructure which is largely privately owned and maintained while democracy around the globe is beginning to break down. Private corporations are laying fiber optic cables, launching satellites into near earth orbit, and edging into the energy sector by reopening nuclear power facilities to have enough electricity to train artificial intelligence. When infrastructure is privately funded it raises myriad questions about who is profiting in its creation and use, and who will be responsible for cleaning it up when it is obsolete.

Most people do not understand how the information network functions. That it is at its heart a network of 1.5 million kilometers of fiber optic cable with an average life span of 25 years. These cables are running under the ocean, transporting data from servers and personal devices around the globe in the form of binary code, beamed down the lengths of these submarine cables as a light pulse. This pulse needs to be amplified every 46 miles, then carried to antennas, translated into a radio waves and sent through the air at a frequency which is unique to each message. This message is sent to the device of the person who requested the data. These types of systems, not to mention satellites and artificial intelligence, require huge amounts of financial, material, and temporal resources which we could be putting to other uses, or simply leaving undisturbed. The fact that these systems are spoken about in vague and ethereal terms—cyber space, the web, cloud storage, air drop—untethers them from our physical world. The Cloud seeks to reframe the landscape to include information infrastructure and thereby tie it to a material and political reality.
Text by Caroline LiouThe mythology of southern California is framed by the car window: freeways, billboards, power lines, pass by in an endless rolling landscape—we’re just along for the ride. The massive scale of industry is seen at a distance, separated by a thick pane of glass that flattens everything into just another backdrop. Lucinda Trask’s exhibition The Cloud is also framed by a window, offering a glimpse of the textile piece I climbed a mountain to scoop information out of the air (2025). Patches of yellows and blues beckon to passersby with a promise of bright skies, while thin, wiry lines stitch a hazy contour—only to reveal the silhouette of a radio tower, dramatically backlit against the interior of the gallery as the sun sets.
The exhibition makes visible the seam of things—radio towers, fiber optic cables, “the cloud”—the various forms of communications infrastructure that we take for granted, invisible, and, as the artist writes, out of the way. Trask’s works are anything but. Installed in the tiny premises of Spore Space, the two works at the center of the presentation—400 yards from shore and From elbow to fingertip (both 2025)—emerge from all corners of the room, spreading over the floor, suspending from the ceiling, penetrating through the walls. Their overwhelming materiality infiltrates the space: the velvety fuzz of felt, the loose threads of embroidery floss, the frayed hem of denim.
By translating wires, cords, and cables into textiles, Trask renders their politics material, reminding viewers that infrastructure, too, can be tangible, intimate, and pliable. In doing so, she engages in what art historian and curator Julia Bryan-Wilson describes as “textile politics,” a framework in which textiles themselves carry political meaning. Trask’s works, then, not only depict the various forms of infrastructure, but also embody its underlying set of immaterial relations and systems. Just as the denim industry implicates countless others—from its historical associations with the indigo dye trade in India and blue-collar laborers in the United States to its modern-day production concentrated across Asia and its distribution across high fashion outlets—so, too, does digital infrastructure. The virtual sphere is built on a real one, relying on industries that range from mining and energy extraction to aerospace and telecommunications. Trask’s use of craft materials—including denim, cotton, and clay— embraces these embedded histories of industry and, specifically, labor, to draw a parallel between one system of production and consumption and the next. The artist’s materiality, in other words, is an assertion in and of itself. “Part of the potency of textile politics,” as Bryan-Wilson writes, “is how stuff is able to assert itself, how things have affective, and productive, agency.” The entangled threads and frayed hems of Trasks’s soft sculptures are a direct analogy for these interconnected systems, illustrating how social fabric is simultaneously bound and unbound, subject to wear, strain, and fraying through repeated use.
If craft, as both a site of resistance and reinforcement, functions as a material means of critique against industrialization, how can representation contend with an industry largely defined by its immateriality? Paradoxically, it is through representation itself that Lucinda Trask renders these forms real again, seamlessly navigating the space between image and material through her soft sculptures. Carefully positioned to be viewed through the gallery window, I climbed a mountain to scoop information out of the air hinges on its initial presentation as an image to give way to the unexpected dimensionality of its form. Meanwhile, in 400 yards from shore, cut-out patterns evoking coral structures drape across a thick denim tube on the gallery floor, in a ripple that transforms the flat silhouette to sculptural form. Abstracted and aestheticized, her sculptures push and pull between image and material, echoing the way in which information ricochets from light pulses and pixels to wires and cables, and back again—underlining the disconnect felt in the transition between materiality and immateriality. Through her repetition of silhouetted motifs and deployment of fabric itself, Trask deliberately plays with the way in which material dissolves into image.
However, The Cloud insists on tethering the information network to its material and political reality—after all, even “the cloud” is rooted somewhere, in something. As political theorist Hannah Arendt writes, “human life…is always rooted in a world of men and of man-made things which it never leaves or altogether transcends.” Things shape human existence, just as humans, in turn, shape things. Expanding on Arendt’s writings, political philosopher Bonnie Honig specifies that it is public things—that is, infrastructure, which are crucial to our connection and therefore, any possibility of constituency—that shape a public. Fundamentally, The Cloud is an attempt by the artist to restore public things to the public, who are increasingly alienated from their means of production. Trask makes use of textiles as a uniquely relational material—meant to be worn out through repeated use, but also worn as a site of expression—to encapsulate the ambiguous relationship between things and humans. Through her material refashioning of infrastructure, Lucinda Trask reorients our relationship from one of passivity to one of agency—one that is, ultimately, an act of self-creation.1. Rodrigo Ormachea
Emergence

March 30 - May 25, 2025Opening Reception March 30, 11:00 - 2:00PM

Spore Space is excited to present Emergence by Rodrigo Ormachea. Rodrigo is a 4th generation jeweler and interdisciplinary artist. While metalsmithing for him is an exploration of forms with a function, clay has allowed for a detachment from practicality, allowing for a more authentic exploration of ideas into physical forms. The exhibition is a continuation of his development of uninhibited forms. Rodrigo resides in Ventura, California with his son Sumaq, who helps to evoke earnest imagination.

Emergence is when complex patterns arise from simpler parts, as seen in nature and human-made systems, such as the growth of coral reefs, the branching of trees, the formation of weather patterns, or the evolution of cities. Emergence is not the result of a single force, but a collaboration and conversation between materials, time, and environment.&nbsp; The exhibition presents a series of interlocking ceramic sculptures. &nbsp;While the&nbsp;geometry of the work might be&nbsp;rudimentary it's the combinations of these forms and their relation to one another where complexity emerges. Vibrant oranges and muted greens suggest the slow patina of decay and renewal, like flesh giving way to mineral. The clay remembers pressure, and the kiln’s unpredictable environment&nbsp;coaxes out color and texture, blurring the line between the organic and the elemental.&nbsp;

July 20 - July 26, 2025Opening Reception July 20, 10:00 - 1:00PM

Chairs sprout claws. Fossils press through walls. Houses hum with memory and bloom wings. In Mattia Braccini’s ceramic world, everyday objects shift into creatures, vessels, and dream fragments alive with memory, instinct, and metamorphosis.

“The house shelters daydreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.” -Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

Here, clay becomes a keeper and house of dreams.

This intimate world offers slowness and attention. Through a window, viewers glimpse a quiet space, where objects hold the imprint of many lives the human, insect, and ancient. Ceramics don’t just decorate they dream and remember.

Good Night Spore SpaceBri Skellievera rodriguezJmy James KiddElizabeth Herring

July 31, 20256:00PM

It's time to announce some big Spore news – we will be ending our lease at our space on Matilija Street come end of July 🎭

We are so grateful to have been able to host shows and performances at the space over the last 2.5 years! As an artist-run project space, our ability to maintain open hours and host rotating programming has changed with our practices, and in reflection so is our approach to sustainable organizing.

Spore itself will continue sans space in various shape-shifting forms this year. Look out for announcements from us about temporary exhibitions in Ojai and catch us at the next Off Register and Opaf!

We will miss hanging out with our community on Sunday mornings! Thank you to all our friends and friends of friends who joined us for openings and supported our events ❣️

To celebrate our last day in the space join us on Thursday night 7/31 at 6pm for an evening of performances with Bri Skellie, Jmy James Kidd, vera rodriguez, Robin Nisbet, and Elizabeth Herring.

❣️ Kira, Rosemary, and Elizabeth

ZZ Krebs
At Other Places Art Fair

September 27, 202511:00AM - 6:00PM

Spore Space is pleased to present work by artist ZZ Krebs at our booth at Other Places Art Fair this year.

Krebs’s practice spans sculpture, installation, and drawing, and is rooted in both research and a generational lineage of stone carving. This body of work, a collection of pieces created over the past five years, explores cycles of transformation, geological time, and the quiet but constant presence of impermanence in human lifeStone is central to Krebs’s work: as monument, as sediment, as memory, and as a vessel for time itself. In her hands, stone doesn’t merely hold form; it carries rich histories, echoes of geological rhythms, and its own vital&nbsp;material life. As Jane Bennett writes in Vibrant Matter: “Even metal is alive—it can crack in interesting ways… the line of travel of these cracks … [is] expressive of an emergent causality.” It is exactly this emergent and unpredictable nature of matter that drives Krebs's work: each piece is a negotiation between the artist, her environment, and the agency of the material itself.Themes of ecological interdependence, cosmological cycles, and deep time resonate throughout this exhibition. Drawing, sculpture, and installation merge into environments that are immersive and contemplative. And yet, the work remains grounded in the tactile: the weight of stone, the flicker of light, the texture of polished or rough surfaces. These elements don’t seek to resolve or explain themselves, instead creating space for ambiguity, stillness, and presence. Is this a ruin or a beginning? The tension between the two is where the work lives.

Krebs allows materials to speak through metaphor,&nbsp; texture, movement, and form. As Bennett suggests, materials carry their own directionality and decision-making; Krebs listens closely to this. The materials act. The artist responds.

Krebs does not present nature as something to be decoded, but something to be in relation with – responsive, layered, and always in flux. This installation invites viewers to slow down, to pay attention to how things shift, break, and emerge; and finally, to fix that patient lens on their own lives

&nbsp;ZZ Krebs (b. 1993 Washington, DC) is a multimedia sculptor and installation artist. She received her MFA in Art from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2019. She received her BFA in Visual Art from the University of San Diego with a double minor in Art History and Marine Science in 2015. Krebs has been in exhibitions at Baroque Works, Ladies’ Room, LACE Gallery, Human Resources Gallery, Commons LA, Track 16 Gallery, which was featured in Curate LA, and at numerous colleges and universities. She received merit grants to be an artist in residence at Can Serrat International Artist Residency (Barcelona, Spain), Vermont Studio Center (Burlington, Vermont), Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (Amherst, VA), Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (Hyattsville, MD), L’Air Arts (Paris, France), and the Mountain School of Art (Los Angeles, CA). Krebs currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

New Earth Hotline

October 19 - December 15, 2024Opening Reception October 19, 6:00 - 8:00PM

This next iteration of New Earth Hotline is an interactive art work by San Francisco based artist Cole Ryder whose work straddles the worlds of design and conceptual art. Ryder's practice often deploys open source methodologies to generate unpredictable group narratives. The reflexive nature and playful irony of his work unearths absurdity in common human conventions.

In 2023, Ryder produced the initial New Earth Hotline in the streets of San Francisco, experimenting with techniques in virality through the analog format of wheat pasting posters that contained a strong call to action, urging pedestrians to CALL THIS NUMBER NOW!
Callers to the New Earth Hotline are prompted to leave a message declaring at least one thing they know to be true, resulting in a collection of truths from anonymous participants curious enough to call the number. For the 2024 hotline, flyers have been deployed in the town of Ojai in a new regional experiment.

Ojai, beyond being Ryder’s hometown, has a unique contained geography which presents itself as a special site for the hotline in that it reveals a specific sampling of localized “truths”. The insular boundaries of the valley ensure the spread of rapid information, calling attention to the meaning of virality outside of the digital scape. By collecting people’s truths in Ojai, New Earth Hotline becomes both an anonymous and incredibly intimate presentation of the beliefs held by neighbors, friends, and strangers in a small town.

In addition to flyers, a special “Truth Booth” will be presented on September 15th at Spore Space to record truths from the general public.
The culminating collection of truths will be presented at Spore Space in the format of an audio-visual installation suited to 2-3 people at a time. New Earth Hotline &nbsp;will be the first presentation of Ryder’s work in Ojai since completing his MFA degree at the California College of Arts in 2024. His work looks to contribute to a stranger and kinder future.

Animals Watching

September 8 - October 6, 2024Opening Reception September 8, 10:00 - 2:00PM

<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c0fc7c368ee669c869560bf25d6c6d7ae69ebfae7f58d0b1535991dfb5e46264/Anima-cam-wonder-2.00_05_01_22.Still026.jpg" data-mid="217099352" border="0" data-scale="64" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c0fc7c368ee669c869560bf25d6c6d7ae69ebfae7f58d0b1535991dfb5e46264/Anima-cam-wonder-2.00_05_01_22.Still026.jpg" />

For nine years, Joel Fox has maintained a trail camera in the Cozy Dell creek bed. With a desire to collaborate with the creatures of Cozy, Fox transforms an array of props—a mannequin, makeup mirrors, bowls of water, emu eggs, plastic arms, string, a white floor, a picture frame—into a surreal landscape where animals can shape their own narratives. Some things worked, many didn't.

Each night brought a new nocturnal procession. The animals and birds present themselves in often species specific clusters - the fox, the racoons, the two skunks, the mountain lion, the bear, the owls, the redtails, the possums. They are themselves, in their own world. And it’s in these moments&nbsp; we catch a glimpse of the magic that exists in the time after dark—a magic that pushes us to rethink the boundaries between human and animal perspectives.

As the recordings continue the environment shifts and so do the creatures. In the wake of the Thomas Fire new patterns emerged in the footage- with bears, mountain lions, and foxes&nbsp; appearing with more frequency as their range had drastically shrunk.

Animals Watching reveals how humans shape the landscape both intentionally and inadvertently, creating environments that animals navigate. As we observe these animals and props, we are reminded of our own place in the world—both as curious onlookers and as part of a landscape blurring the boundaries between human and animal, observer and observed.&nbsp; This collaboration comes from a belief that animals feel their own life, which sounds simple but is rarely acknowledged.&nbsp; We are so oblivious of our massive presence that we forget that most animal behavior we see is their reactions to us being there- usually to get something from us or fearing us, or both. It is as if humans are all animals think about, because that is what we usually see them doing.Maybe this is why we seem to feel that if something has consciousness but we are not around to witness it, then it doesn't exist. It is hard to grasp that the world is filled with other beings that want to be with their friends, take care of their families, hold grudges, have fears, experience dreams, and see beauty.&nbsp; In many ways, our inability to see beyond our own presence leads us to dismiss the full depth of the animal world, reducing their existence to mere reactions to us.&nbsp;- Joel Fox
Joel Fox is a multifaceted artist known for his playful and imaginative approach to visual art, television, and commercial work. Growing up in Ojai, Fox was influenced by his surroundings and family. His artwork often blends absurdity and meditation, utilizing a variety of mediums including animation, timelapse, photography, and video.&nbsp; He received a degree in Integrated Media from CalArts, where he later taught in their MFA design program. His artistic journey has spanned various fields, from corporate identity and web art to children's television and&nbsp;has been exhibited across the U.S. and Europe.&nbsp;Notably, he contributed to Yo Gabba Gabba, where his fun and imaginative segments became standout features.&nbsp;&nbsp;Eleven years ago Fox returned to Ojai, where he continues to create art and video with his partner Jennifer Jordan Day.

Laurita Cortese
Crescent Sun

June 9 - July 28, 2024Opening Reception June 9, 3:00 - 8:00PM

Spore Space is excited to present ‘Crescent Sun’ by Los Angeles based artist, Laurita Cortese. Cortese has created a new body of ceramic work that explores interior space in relationship to the resting body and the celestial.

In this installation, Cortese has created a series of amorphous ceramic sculptures that function in pairs: one emitting light and one receiving. The interior of the gallery has been softened by warm light, the hard edges on the sculptures have been pressed, smoothed, and rounded; suggesting a space that prioritizes a body in need of pause, rest, and recovery. Cortes's ceramic sculptures simultaneously resemble the body and functional forms, questioning if one is observing a lamp, the shoulders of a person, a tree stump, or a satellite dish?

The work highlights a dynamic of emitting and reflecting, projecting and absorbing, both within ourselves and within these forces in the natural world.
While Cortese’s practice is rooted in sculpture, often using clay as her primary medium. During a year of introspection she turned her interest towards earth and growing a garden. In this process of gardening Cortese was struck by the overwhelming universality of growing plant life. Light is converted into matter through photosynthesis and this energy becomes incorporated and digested and therefore incorporated into other living organisms. As Annie Dillard describes in her 1975 essay Total Eclipse:
“This was the universe about which we have read so much and never before felt: the universe as a clockwork of loose spheres flung at stupefying, unauthorized speeds.”
This body of work was created in relation to the awe Annie Dillard describes. In Cortese’s sculptures and installation, she considers light source: how it can fuel, define, influence, and enrich. What would the interior space resemble if its light source was a vehicle to fuel awe and enrich human experience? How can we imagine this display of vibrant matter, reminding us that we and everything surrounding us is contained in this cycle of emitting, reflecting, and absorbing?

Laurita Cortese is an artist, fabricator, and designer currently residing in Los Angeles. In 2012 they earned an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art and received a BFA in Sculpture from Adelphi University in New York. Their primary medium is clay; working with the material to create sculpture, wheel-thrown functional objects, and, most recently, experimenting with historical methods for natural building and vernacular architecture with unfired and site-specific clay. They have exhibited their sculpture, paintings, performance, and design objects internationally including exhibitions with Steve Turner Gallery in Los Angeles, Louise Alexander Gallery in Porto Cervo, Italy, Arizona State University, New Mexico State University, Brittany Vallejo at OPaf, The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, BBQLA, Embassy, Half Gallery in Los Angeles, and The Bedfellows Club in Little Rock, Arkansas. They are the 2021 recipient of the California Institute of the Arts Faculty Development Grant to study permaculture landscape design with Quail Springs in the Cuyama Valley in California. It is from that research they are currently working on a habitat restoration earthwork and regenerative agriculture garden located in Los Angeles. Laurita is the Director of the Ceramics Lab and Technical Faculty in the School of Art at CalArts where they teach courses in clay and ceramic sculpture, wheel throwing, and glaze chemistry.
